Gabriel de Diego

Regional Managing Director, Central & South America.

We’re excited to welcome Gabriel de Diego to M Resources as our new Regional Managing Director, Central & South America.

With a wealth of experience across global commodity trading—most recently as Head of Ferrous Trading – Americas at Trafigura—Gabriel brings deep market insight and leadership to our team. His career has also included key roles at Exiros, Greenwich Metal, and Accenture, and he has long been a trusted partner of MRT, supporting metallurgical coal trading activities.

In his new role, Gabriel will lead sales and sourcing efforts across Central and South America, support growth in other key commodities, and contribute to strategic sourcing projects in North America.

We sat down with Gabriel for a quick Q&A to learn more about what he’s looking forward to in this next chapter with our team!

1. What drew you to this industry and what excites you about it?

What hooked me from the start is the intensity—commodities trading moves fast, and you’re constantly making decisions that carry real weight. But what truly keeps me engaged is the rare mix of skill sets it demands: sharp, rational analysis of markets and prices, paired with strong people skills and relationship-building. Add to that the chance to work with high-caliber individuals from all over the world—each deal a collision of cultures and perspectives—and it never stops being fascinating.

2. What has been your first impression of the M Resources company culture and your new team so far?

It’s been a smooth transition, mostly because I already felt like part of the team. I’ve known Matt for almost 20 years, and I’ve been involved with M Resources in a part-time capacity since 2016. That gave me a front-row seat to its fantastic growth and transformation over the years. What stands out most is the culture: everyone’s sharp, driven, and deeply committed—but there’s zero politics, zero bureaucracy. It’s a place where people trust each other, move fast, and stay focused on making things happen.

3. What are you most looking forward to achieving in your new role?

I’m looking forward to deepening our presence across Latin America—strengthening existing partnerships and opening new doors. There’s real potential to grow both volumes and market share, but also to bring fresh opportunities into the mix. I’m especially excited to contribute to our diversification strategy and help position M Resources as the partner of choice—not just for where the industry is today, but for where it’s headed.

4. What skills and experiences do you bring to this position that you think will help you succeed?

I bring a combination of technical foundation, commercial instinct, and deep regional expertise. I’ve worked on both sides of the table—buying and selling—across most steelmaking raw materials, which positions me well to support M Resources’ diversification strategy. And having spent most of my career in Latin America, I understand the cultural, logistical, and commercial nuances that are key to doing business effectively in the region.

5. What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

I’ve got a wide range of passions, but music is my main one. I used to be a professional jazz guitar player, and I still pick it up now and then—and I thoroughly enjoy live music whenever I can. I also love surfing, scuba diving, fitness, DJing, poker, and traveling. Beyond that, I’m constantly diving into new topics—anything from AI and tech to health, longevity, philosophy, and self-improvement. I’m a very curious person and enjoy learning for the sake of learning.

6. Who has been the biggest influence on your career so far, and why?

I’ve had the privilege of working at leading global companies, where I was exposed to several inspiring people who led by example—calm under pressure, sharp in their thinking, and always fair and straightforward. I’ve also learned a lot from the counterparts I’ve done business with—both suppliers and clients.

7. What advice would you give to someone starting in this industry?

Be reliable, stay curious and proactive, and never cut corners. This is a trust-based business—your word and your reputation are everything. Learn the fundamentals, understand how value is created, and don’t be afraid to ask questions. And never underestimate the power of strong relationships—they often make all the difference.
